Services for UNIX - Interoperability

Can I Set Up User Name Mapping in Windows Vista?

Unfortunately, no if you don’t have a SFU 3.5 or W2K3 R2 machines on the network that is running User Name Mapping service. This has been a major disappointment with NFS deployments using Windows Vista.

However, there is a tiny little good news for you if you are looking for a way to enable Client for NFS in Windows Vista to be able to do something other than anonymous mounts. There is a registry tweak that you can modify to tweak Vista NFS client to use a pair of UNIX UID and GID while mounting and accessing NFS shares.

Here’s how you can do it -

* Start Registry Editor
* Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ClientForNFS\CurrentVersion\Default
* Create two DWORD values namely AnonymousUid and AnonymousGid
* Set these values to the UID and GID you would like this NFS client to use
* Restart your Client for NFS service using the Microsoft Services for NFS MMC snap-in

Go ahead and mount shares on this machine and now the Client for NFS driver will send those values as the UID and GID to the NFS server. You can also use the mount command without any parameters to verify if these values are being used. You should see something like this -

C:\>mount

Local Remote Properties
——————————————————————————-
x: \\NFSSERVER\NFSSHARE UID=10012, GID=10011
rsize=8192, wsize=8192
mount=soft, timeout=1.6
retry=1, locking=yes
fileaccess=644, lang=ANSI
casesensitive=no

Try creating a file on the share and on the UNIX box, you can see that they bear the same UID and GID values as we have mentioned in the above DWORD values. If you use the ls command that comes with SUA, you will not see the correct ownership information because the client is still doing anonymous mounts and as you might have guessed already - we are just changing the UID and GID that the client is sending to the server. It is more like squashing from a client side instead of doing it from the server.

There’s a security consideration as well - Every user on this machine will start sending these same NFS credentials so if you are going to have multiple users using this machine - think carefully about using this registry tweak. You also will not be able to use any secondary groups. I guess that can also be a consideration for many environments.

BTW, this works the same way on Windows 7 Beta box ;)

Configgy: Scala configuration and logging

Configgy is a library for handling config files and logging for a scala daemon. The idea is that it should be simple and straightforward, allowing you to plug it in and get started quickly, writing small useful daemons without entering the shadowy world of java frameworks.

Features for configuration include:

* very simple config file format
* values can be bools, ints, strings, or lists of strings
* sets of key/value pairs can be grouped into blocks and nested inside each other
* some blocks can inherit default values from other blocks
* values can depend on previously-set values, or environment variables
* files can be “imported” into each other
* scala API for subscribing to a config node and receiving notification of changes
* JMX hooks for viewing/changing config in realtime

Features for logging include:

* simple API for writing log messages
* configured via the config file
* log to multiple files, console, or syslog servers
* automatic logfile rolling

sun blade 100 - boot from cdrom

Sun Blade 100 unable to boot from CDROM

- pentru bios prompt - power on, wait for beep, power on twice

I’ve seen a million messages on this subject, but from what I can tell,
nobody ever got there issue figured out.. I’m desperately hoping we can
with mine.

Like others, I picked up a Sun Blade 100 on Ebay.. it doesn’t boot,
which is fine.. I was going to wipe it and install Solaris 10 fresh
anyways.

First thing I did:

set-defaults
reset-all
boot cdrom
—————– Error: can’t open boot device
boot cdrom1
—————– Error: can’t open boot device
boot cdrom2
—————– The lights come on the drive, I hear it
spinning up, then I get the dreaded:
Error: Can’t read disk label
Can’t read disk label package

probe-ide
—————— Both the hard drive and the CDROM show up..
They are on the Secondary IDE channel, with the CDROM being the slave,
and hard drive being the master. I believe the CDROM was set to Cable
Select on the jumper setting though.

So I powered it down, grabbed another IDE CDROM drive that was laying
around and plugged it in.. Same “Can’t read disk label” errors..

Any idea’s what to try next?

What is Outsourcing?

Jun 9, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: software outsourcing

What is Outsourcing?

1. What is Outsourcing?

Listen to the world’s top outsourcing authority, Peter Bendor-Samuel, answer the question ‘What is Outsourcing?’

What is outsourcing? Outsourcing takes place when an organization transfers the ownership of a business process to a supplier. The key to this definition is the aspect of transfer of control. This definition differentiates outsourcing from business relationships in which the buyer retains control of the process or, in other words, tells the supplier how to do the work. It is the transfer of ownership that defines outsourcing and often makes it such a challenging, painful process. In outsourcing, the buyer does not instruct the supplier how to perform its task but, instead, focuses on communicating what results it wants to buy; it leaves the process of accomplishing those results to the supplier.

How to Facilitate Clarity in Outsourcing Companies: How English Can Be a Facilitator and Not a Barrier - wikiHow

# Prepare your communication before you deliver it. Think about your message:

* Consider who will receive your message and be affected by your communication.
* Examine the exact purpose of your message by asking yourself: “What do I want to accomplish with this message?”

# Remember that clarity consists of a clear context. If people understand the context that surrounds a problem, idea, or message, your communication will be more meaningful and captivating. Never presume that everyone understands the problem, significance, or context of a situation. Deconstruct ideas to provide context.
# Never assume that everyone understands English. Comprehension and speaking are two different aspects. If a person speaks well, that does not mean he or she understands well. Ask people to rephrase your messages and ideas in their own words to be sure they have understood.
# Adapt your use of language to the people you are communicating with. Be aware of any language difficulties that people may have. Adapt your communication to the person’s level. Use clear and precise specifications and language to express details and say exactly what you mean.
# Minimize noise and maximize understanding. Noise can be:

* 1) Long sentences (more than 20 words),
* 2) Idiomatic expressions: “Let me know”, “You got it?” (Compared to “Please tell/inform me” and “Was that clear/comprehensible?”),
* 3) Jargon, and
* 4) Phrasal verbs: “Figure out”, “drive up” (Compared to “proper” English: “figure out” means understand/calculate/think of and “drive up” means increase)

# Be attentive to how you communicate. Non-verbal communication impacts communication and people are affected by how you express yourself. Consider your tone of voice and facial expressions as you communicate your message and ideas. Be sure to speak at a speed that is consistent and clear. Avoid speaking fast and inarticulately.
# Repeat and Rephrase (R&R) to reduce the risk of misunderstanding and to increase comprehension of important points, details, and requirements.
# Be proactive by repeating and rephrasing important details and points. Get feedback from the people you are communicating with to be sure that your communication is comprehensible.
# Listen actively. Listening is equally important as communicating. Clarity originates from listening. Be an active listener and not a simple communicator. Repeat and rephrase to be sure you understand what people are saying.
# Use e-mail to facilitate clarity. E-mail is your best friend to reinforce clarity after phone conversations, meetings, and conference calls. Use E-mail as a tool to review important points and details that you have communicated.
# Create a communication-friendly environment in which clarity and understanding are a priority. Communication is slower when you make an effort to be clear and give people an opportunity to ask for clarification. Build confidence in non-native English speaking teams by being a “leader” in clarifying important points and details. Stress the importance of asking for clarification, if details are not clear. Use visual aids (diagrams, screenshots, pictures, and images) to facilitate communication and add clarity.
